Wiki In Africa is a South African-based NGO that initiates and manages knowledge contribution programs across Africa and beyond. The most notable are Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Women (including the Focus Group, SheSaid, and Inspiring Open), WikiAfrica Hour, WikiChallenge Ecoles d’Afrique, and WikiFundi. There are additional drives, associated projects, and Wikimedia movement campaigns that we proudly create, support, and take part in.
2024 will be the 7th year since Wiki In Africa was officially registered, although some projects are now in their 9th year of activation.
Wiki In Africa: Program Facilitator
We are looking for a multi-skilled program facilitator to support Wiki in Africa throughout 2024 (and beyond) who has experience in, and is excited by communicating to the Wikimedia community through live broadcasting and campaigns, and also has a passion for Wikipedia in education. This person should have experience within the Wikimedia community. The position is entirely remote.
The position involves two roles:
- Live Broadcast Facilitator
- Lead Ambassador for WikiAfrica Tools
All tasks are expected to be conducted over approximately 20 hours per week or 0.5 FTE.
Successful applicants should expect to manage the following tasks associated with each of the projects:
Role 1: Live Broadcast Facilitator
(10 hours per week or 0.25 FTE)
The program facilitator will produce Wiki In Africa’s successful WikiAfrica Hour vodcast in the Live Broadcast role. Additional exciting tasks include researching, planning, and instigating new channels for existing and future content from the program.
Operations: Live Broadcast Production
The Contractor will:
- Produce WikiAfrica Hour, the monthly live webcast (including special events and launches) throughout the year,
- Communicate effectively with Wikimedians about upcoming shows – on-wiki and off-wiki and via social media, and
- Collaboratively research, develop, and implement extensions of the live broadcasting format, more efficient delivery of the Newscasts, and the use of its archival content via other communications channels.
Analysis: Project Impact Reports
The Contractor will:
- Compile metrics and analytics, feedback and surveys, and monthly reports to the WIA team, and
- Compile an end-of-the-year “Results and best practices” and an internal report for internal evaluation and the overall WIA activity report.
Role 2: Lead Ambassador for WikiAfrica Tools
(10 hours per week or 0.25 FTE)
This role involves being the general lead ambassador for two of Wiki In Africa’s technology tools: WikiFundi and the ISA Tool.
The Lead Ambassador role involves the contractor providing:
- Visibility through up-to-date and relevant communications outreach and promotion through both on-Wiki and off-Wiki channels,
- Training or office hour sessions to facilitate the effective use of both tools, and
- Compile impact data through metrics, analytics, usage reports, and surveys.
The ISA Tool tasks will involve:
- Working with the Wiki In Africa team to support the success of internal (Wiki In Africa) and external ISA Tool campaigns,
- Encouraging and supporting the Wikimedia Community’s use of the ISA Tool to run campaigns,
- Monitor the ISA Tool health and liaise with tech development to fix bugs, and
- Improving the tool’s accessibility through community drives for key improvements, such as translations.
WikiFundi tasks will involve:
- Implementing, facilitating, and supporting an ambassador network for WikiFundi,
- Researching the offline and education landscape across Africa for strategic partnerships and opportunities, and
- Providing effective communications across on-Wiki and off-Wiki spaces.
The person
Consider applying if you have the following:
Essential skills
- 2+ years experience in a project management or community development role,
- Experience in facilitating groups and building communities,
- Organising events (online or offline),
- Wikimedia experience across multiple platforms,
- Exceptional and demonstrable writing and interpersonal communication skills in English,
- Time management, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines,
- An analytical mind and ability to think critically,
- Be proactive and eager to take the initiative,
- Managing tasks independently and as part of a team, and
- Experience contributing to websites (WordPress), social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Youtube, and/or Instagram), word processors, and spreadsheets.
Nice to haves
- Production experience in media, broadcasting, or podcasting,
- Has fine-tuned knowledge of various community and project management-related software (e.g. Qualtrix, Asana),
- Experience in design and communications platforms (e.g. Canva, Hootsuite, Mailchimp, etc.),
- Experience or familiarity with StreamYard, and
- Can read and write French (not mandatory, but would be very appreciated).
Eligibility
- Candidates should be gender-sensitive and live on or be from the African continent. We will accept candidates from outside Africa as long as they have direct and recent African experience.
- This is a remote position to be conducted from the successful candidate’s place of residence or an alternative space. As such, they are expected to have the correct visa or work permit to reside in the country they will be working from. As such, Wiki In Africa will not facilitate the application of visas or work permits or the transition from one country to another.
- To be considered, the applicant should have daily access to a personal computer and reliable internet.
Allowance and duration
- This is a paid position.
- 11-month duration; start 1st February – ends 31st December 2024. Extendable.
- The tasks are pegged at 0.5 FTE over 12 months (allowance should be made for expected peak periods).
- This contract position does not constitute ongoing employment with Wiki In Africa. However, there is an opportunity for growth within the organization (to be discussed at a performance review).
- No additional payments for national holidays, holiday leave, or sickness will be made.
- Local tax obligations or other legal implications are the responsibility of the contractee.
