Wiki In Africa is looking for an English / French translator to support Wiki in Africa throughout 2024 (and beyond). This person must have experience within the Wikimedia community. The winning applicant will be hired as a preferred service provider to work across multiple projects. The position is entirely remote.
Successful applicants should expect to provide translation from English language (source) into French language in the following situations (by order of likelihood):
- translation of content on wiki pages (in particular on Meta and on Commons)
- translation of content directly on documents (such as press releases, newsletters, reports, social media posts, etc.)
- translation of webpages (such as on Wiki in Africa websites hosted on WordPress)
- provide occasional live interpretation support, such as meetings and webinars, ensuring accurate and timely communication between participants in real-time.
- subtitling of videos
- transcription of french videos or audio
- translation of visuals (hosted on Canva)
- etc.
Translation tasks are expected to range between 1 to 20 hours per week. Payment will be based on an agreed hourly rate. Working schedule is largely flexible (as long as deadlines are respected and occasional coordination meetings attended).
The person
Consider applying if you have the following: Essential skills
- Exceptional and demonstrable writing skills in French
- Can read, write and communicate in English
- 2+ years experience in the wikimedia ecosystem
- Experience editing wikis
- Experience with translation using the Translate extension on the Wikimedia projects
- Experience contributing to websites (WordPress), Youtube, and word processors
- Time management, self-organisational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
Very nice to haves
- Understanding and experience of using the TranslateWiki extension to prepare a wiki page for translation (markup)
Nice to haves
- Experience in using translatewiki
- Experience in Canva
Eligibility
- Candidates should be gender-sensitive and live on or be from the African continent. We will accept candidates from outside Africa as long as they have direct and recent African experience.
- This is a remote, service opportunity to be conducted from the successful candidate’s place of residence or an alternative space. As such, they are expected to have the correct visa or work permit to reside in the country they will be working from Wiki In Africa will not facilitate the application of visas or work permits or the transition from one country to another.
The applicant should have daily access to a personal computer and reliable internet.
Allowance and duration
- This is not a volunteer position, it will be paid per agreed rate.
- 3-month duration; start 1st October – ends 31st December 2024. Renewable.
- The tasks are pegged between 1 to 20 hours per week, paid monthly on presentation of invoice and timesheet.
- As a short-term service level position, this does not constitute ongoing employment with Wiki In Africa. However, there might be future opportunities within the organisation.
- No additional payments will be made for national holidays, holiday leave, or sickness.
- Local tax obligations or other legal implications are the responsibility of the contractee.
