It\u2019s about <strong>representation, recognition, and rewriting the imbalance<\/strong> in how women are remembered, referenced, and quoted in public knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-info has-small-font-size mb-0 pb-0 mt-0 pt-0\" style=\"font-size:12px\"><strong>INFO BOX: Wikiquote<\/strong> is a free, collaborative project from the Wikimedia Foundation that collects and curates quotes from notable people, books, films, and more. Like Wikipedia, it&rsquo;s open to anyone to edit and contribute, and its mission is to make the words and ideas of influential figures accessible to everyone. It&rsquo;s available in multiple languages and is an important resource for preserving and sharing global voices \u2014 especially when it comes to underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is #SheSaid, and Why Does It Matter?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, men\u2019s voices have dominated public platforms \u2014 from books and speeches to online databases and encyclopedias. Wikiquote is no exception. That\u2019s where <strong>#SheSaid<\/strong> comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, during the campaign window, contributors focus on creating or improving Wikiquote pages for <strong>notable women<\/strong> \u2014 activists, scientists, artists, politicians, authors, and more. The aim? To make sure that when people look for inspiring words, wisdom, or thought leadership, <strong>women\u2019s voices are there<\/strong>.It\u2019s about more than just content. It\u2019s about <strong>equity<\/strong>. About <strong>making sure women\u2019s contributions aren\u2019t overlooked<\/strong>, forgotten, or left out of the digital public record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Global Movement \u2014 Bigger Than Ever in 2024<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024 campaign brought together volunteers across <strong>five continents and 19 language Wikiquotes<\/strong>. For the first time, communities writing in <strong>Banjar, Fante, Setswana<\/strong>, and <strong>Dutch<\/strong> joined the movement \u2014 expanding its reach into new regions and cultures. In total:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>11,029 articles<\/strong> were either created or improved \u2014 <strong>10,091 new entries<\/strong> and <strong>938 enhanced<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Setswana<\/strong> led the charge with <strong>3,039 entries<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hausa<\/strong> followed with <strong>1,921<\/strong>, <strong>English<\/strong> with <strong>1,592<\/strong>, and <strong>Igbo<\/strong> with <strong>1,436<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communities from countries like <strong>Senegal, Nigeria, the Philippines, Serbia, Ukraine, Kenya, and Libya<\/strong> contributed to the wave of activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s success is a testament to how far the campaign has come \u2014 and how much passion and commitment it has inspired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behind every great project\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>#SheSaid is powered by a diverse network of <strong>Wikimedia communities<\/strong>, user groups, educators, and everyday volunteers \u2014 most of them working behind the scenes. Their passion is what keeps the campaign alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some standout contributors this year include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lydie<\/strong>, from the <strong>Wikimedia DRC User Group<\/strong>, whose work documenting the campaign helped shine a spotlight on women leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nanour<\/strong>, from <strong>Wikimedia Libya<\/strong>, who played a key role in strengthening Arabic-language contributions across the <strong>Maghreb region<\/strong>.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bashir<\/strong>, in <strong>Nigeria<\/strong>, who led the Hausa community\u2019s efforts for the second year in a row with remarkable consistency and energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And these are just a few examples. Across the campaign, dozens of leaders stepped up to coordinate local events, train new editors, and spread awareness in their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond the Numbers: Real-World Impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to focus on statistics \u2014 and they\u2019re impressive \u2014 but what truly matters is the <strong>lasting impact<\/strong> of this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every new quote added helps reshape how we think about leadership, knowledge, and influence. It means that future generations \u2014 students, researchers, activists \u2014 will have easier access to the words and wisdom of women from all backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also sends a message: <strong>your voice matters<\/strong>. Whether you\u2019re a trailblazer in your field or someone just beginning your journey, your ideas deserve to be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By making these voices more visible, the #SheSaid campaign pushes back against the silencing of women \u2014 past and present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The energy is already building for <strong>#SheSaid 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2025, Wiki Loves Women was invited by with <strong>Art+Feminism<\/strong> to host a special virtual #SheSaid editing event in celebration of International Women&rsquo;s Day. This collaboration brought together contributors from around the world to focus on adding and improving Wikiquote entries for notable women, further amplifying their voices and ensuring their words are accessible to a global audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event not only celebrated women&rsquo;s contributions but also highlighted the importance of representation in digital spaces. Participants engaged in discussions, shared resources, and worked collectively to address the gender gap on Wikiquote, reinforcing the campaign&rsquo;s mission to give women a stronger presence in the realm of open knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This successful partnership exemplifies the power of collaborative efforts in promoting gender equity and preserving women&rsquo;s voices for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plans are also underway for new partnerships, which promises to bring fresh momentum and new audiences to the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also hope to <strong>support emerging communities<\/strong>, especially those that faced challenges this year, and invite more language groups to participate.
